Student Support Services At Scuola Vita Nuova Charter School, we believe that all students can reach high academic, behavioral and community expectations when provided with the necessary support. Therefore, the school has designed a series of interconnected forms of support, some of which are provided to all students and some that are provided only to students who show a specific need.
SUPPORT PROVIDED TO ALL STUDENTS:
Frequent Parent Communication: Our goal is to stay in regular contact with the parents of ALL of our students. Administrators, teachers and others are expected to contact parents for both positive reasons as well as concerns. Teachers and administrators document all conversations with parents for future reference. Coach Class: Each teacher is expected to hold an after-school coach class at least one day each week. Coach class is an opportunity for students to receive extra support on specific learning targets or assignments, re-take an assessment, or make up missed work. Coach class is reserved for students who have been putting forth an adequate effort in class but who still need additional assistance. Coach class should not be offered to students who do not use class time effectively and responsibly. Looping~ Whenever possible, teachers and students stay together for two years. This practice, called “looping”, enables teachers to form strong, multi-year relationships with students and their families and provides an opportunity for teachers to deeply understand each student’s strengths and needs. Small Group Instruction: Students are flexibly grouped throughout a class period into small instructional groups that target their individual strengths and needs.
SUPPORTS PROVIDED TO SELECTED STUDENTS
Individual/Small Group Counseling: Students who are experiencing academic or social difficulty may be referred to either individual or small group counseling. These session allow the school counselor to assist the student with creating a plan to address whatever challenges he/she may be facing in or out of school.
Weekly Academic Progress Reports: Some students receive weekly academic progress to monitor improvement and to provide immediate feedback to students and parents. Referral to Specialist: Students experiencing academic difficulty may receive one-on-one assistance from the school’s special education intervention coordinator. These support services are typically limited in scope to a few critical learning targets and to a specified length of time. Guided Study Hall: Students who are failing to complete assignments and are not reaching proficiency in essential learning targets are scheduled to a Guided Study Hall during the Extended School Day Program. This provides support and tutoring to students and provides a quiet and orderly environment to complete homework, review content or read. |
